CHALLENGE

CHALLENGE

There were no Bulgarian textbooks tailored for refugee and migrant children. The young learners had to use textbooks designed for adults, which led to teachers raising concerns that the content was not age-appropriate. We teamed up with educators from an NGO and the Commissariat of Refugees UN to create a refreshing alternative.

The key challenge was designing and illustrating a textbook suitable for a broad age range—from 6 to 16 years old—that wouldn't feel too childish for older kids but would still engage those just starting their educational journey.

Solution

Solution

We developed a system of visually appealing illustrations centered around three main characters in the textbook—Samir from Afghanistan, Raisa from Ukraine, and Elena from Bulgaria. We also created a color-coding system that corresponded with the grammatical content, making learning more intuitive.

We squeezed in plenty of white space for a clean layout, giving students room to take notes and focus on the material. The textbook was designed to be highly illustrated to break away from the overwhelming text-heavy formats common in language books. It was accompanied by a black-and-white workbook that extended the characters’ stories, providing additional exercises for deeper engagement.
